About My Students
The core team of the Bartram Horticulture Society developed a project based upon the gardens at our school. They have decided to move beyond the gardens and environmental science into the realm of the arts. This is a new aspect of the gardens called "Empowering Students Through Arts".
We no longer have an art club, theater arts, or band here at our school. Students are longing for ways to support their dreams, goals, and talents in the creative arts areas. They asked if they could create a plan to develop these skills to foster the arts. Since many already participate in the Bartram Horticulture Society, students decided to utilize the gardens as a catalyst for their arts. Grants have been written for a mobile recording studio to be outdoors with raps about nature, plants, and the earth to be created. An acting troupe has started to write about the importance of nature in the community of Southwest Philadelphia and its impact upon the residents of the neighborhood. A ceramics class will begin in late summer to create items showcased as part of the garden area. Finally, students will express themselves through painting. While completing each activity in the creative arts, students will be learning concepts in the science room about photosynthesis, pollination, and bees.
First, being part of any group will require students to build their leadership, communication, and positive relationship activities. Leadership skills are crucial for success in the areas of employment and higher learning. My students also need to know how to develop team building skills and learn how to work as part of a cohesive group. They often have difficulty dealing with others, so becoming part of a group activity is critical for self-esteem and establishing relationships with others. In addition, they can learn to be empathetic to others who have additional needs and problems. Critical thinking is also necessary as part of this project where students must make level headed decisions to be successful during project and cooperative learning activities. As a whole, the Art Through Gardens activity will encourage and inspire students to focus on themselves; their interactions with others. Students will use paints and canvas to express themselves in a positive manner.
In Their Own Words
My name is Simeon. I am one of the members of the Bartram Horticulture Society. We are trying to change the culture at Bartram where students seek to find solutions to issues such as academics, relationships, and employment. We already work hard in the gardens surrounding Bartram. Now, we want to extend our garden activities into the world of art. We are working with outside partners in the community to create a culture of hope, respect, and interest in the arts. My friends want more to do here.
I have changed throughout the year. Just like the butterflies we see in the gardens, I have changed from a caterpillar into a butterfly. My attitude towards life is now different. There are many activities at school, facilitated by Mr. T, to make me feel that the school is a positive environment where I can learn and fun things can take place. I have become one of three leaders in the school to help make these activities take place. Students now have a reason to smile and enjoy school.
We want to continue bringing more programs to our school. The gardens have been the center of new activities such as yoga, healthy eating, and exercise activities. Now, the arts will become part of the plan as well. These projects give students something new to look forward to and will help those who struggle in the school environment. The challenge is to sustain these programs year after year to make Bartram a school where the community can take pride and be a part of the educational process.
