My Project
Mental health is a strong focus in education today as our students have overcome many adversities and challenges (i.e. learning through Covid years, natural disasters such as hurricanes and flooding, trauma within their communities, etc). Teachers are on the front lines of helping students facing these serious challenges. We are working with their families and other supports to help them understand their own mental health and behaviors so that they can be successful in school and beyond.
I am an Emerging Leader through New Hanover County Schools, a program whose purpose "...is to identify NHCS teacher leaders, empower them with the minds to recognize their value, leverage their talents, and navigate diverse pathways to positively impact district culture" (@nhcsemergingleaders).
As an Emerging Leader, my responsibility and expectation is to create a Pathway Project. Pathway Projects are projects that help to serve the needs of our students, schools, and/or district.
My Pathway Project is to pilot Art Therapy Kits at my school in hopes of increasing student engagement, enhancing student mental health, minimizing absences, and decreasing behavioral incidences. The purpose of Art Therapy Kits is to provide students with a creative outlet to express emotions and feelings. A variety of kits will be available to support students through various emotions and situations. Each kit is intended to be offered in safe spaces under supervision of safe staff (i.e. counselors, teachers, media specialists, etc). After the pilot program at my school, I intend to extend these kits into my district.
