Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As an English Teacher in a under-performing Manhattan high school, I've recognized my students are largely visual learners. They perform and understand ideas and concepts best when they can see a model or the text of work.
To capitalize on this, I like my students to be hands-on learners.
Throughout the year, I like to incorporate various art and creative projects. These art projects are then displayed in the classroom and in the hallway for students' reference. For most of my students, doing the work for the poster or project is not as difficult as finding the supplies. With 95 percent of my school's students qualifying for free lunch, many students do not have access to basic art supplies. And, sadly, most students in my school don't get to take art until their senior year -- and even then it's only for one trimester.
My Project
For this proposal, I am requesting art supplies such as glue, scissors, and chip board to use during our unit on August Wilson' play, Fences. One of Wilson's key influences in writing the play was a collage by the artist Romare Bearden. Students will research the artist's work, and create a collage depicting a scene from Fences mimicking Bearden's style. Other supplies such as markers, colored pencils, and poster board will be used to create character and setting sketches. Allowing students to choose their own scene from the play and display their learning artistically enables me to see a different side to their level of understanding -- something that can't always be seen in an essay. The final projects and students' written explanation of their process will be displayed in the hallway.
Empowering students through art is a great way to get them to showcase their learning, insight, and emotions.
Donating these basic art supplies not only helps the students, but also others in my school who will view the art and information on display. Thanks in advance for making a difference!
