Art Supplies for Urban Youth

My students need 10 printmaking class packs to design poster-style social/political art.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Westle's classroom raised $746

This project is fully funded

As the only art teacher in an urban middle school serving 7th and 8th grade students, I teach the entire 450+ student population every week. My financial resources are limited and, although my administration is very supportive, art supplies frequently need to be replenished. Your donation of printmaking supplies can help my art classroom continue to be an environment in which my students can express themselves in creative ways.

I would like to do a project with my students that is inspired by the social/political work of graphic artist Shepard Fairey. Fairey is widely known for his recent "Hope" campaign in support of Barack Obama's presidential campaign. I would assist my students in making their own block prints about a social or political topic of their choosing. I believe this lesson will truly motivate and engage my students, as well as provide them with an opportunity to engage in high order thinking and critical thought about our society.

The 10 printmaking class packs I am asking for contain a variety of essential printmaking supplies, ranging from foam plates to printmaking papers and brayers. If this project is fully funded, I will be able to execute this lesson with approximately 300 of my students. The art form of printmaking is highly expressive and I know my students will love the opportunity to work with a new media.

Your help will ensure that my middle school students experience comprehensive art education despite financial limitations. Providing my art classroom with 10 printmaking class packs will allow my students to engage in differentiated critical thinking and create social/political prints of their own. The positive impact of your generosity will extend long past the duration of this project.
