Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My twenty-two second grade students are second language learners. They come from a high poverty area located in Southern California. Our school is 100% free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students come to second grade already one grade level behind in reading.
My students come to second grade with curious minds and an excitement about learning new concepts.
They are passionate about learning, but they often lack the background knowledge and language skills needed to succeed. A successful learning experience is critical for all.
My Project
My plan is incorporating art into my students' everyday learning. Students have a sketchbook that they use throughout the year. In these books, my students are able to respond to various learning activities but need different materials: crayons, markers, colored pencils and oil pastels. By integrating art into all subject areas, students will be able to access their creativity and imagination, something that is often left out of the classroom because of cost and time constraints. With the help of donors, I will be able to provide my students with a variety of art supplies to help them create, imagine, collaborate, inspire and express themselves through art projects.
