Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a sixth grade special education classroom at an Extended Time Junior High School in Brooklyn, NY. My classroom was once used as an office but is now filled with 10 wonderfully energetic, enthusiastic children (8 boys and 2 girls). Special education uses differentiated instruction to meet the needs of children who learn differently. Only one of my children is labeled with mental retardation, the rest have mild-severe learning disabilities and/or are considered emotionally disturbed. It is often hard to get work done as their energy and curiosity have to be satisfied simultaneously, which is not always easy in my 'office' classroom.
The other day we did an assignment on the Stone Age, looking at prehistoric civilizations and I had them work with clay, which I bought at an art store. The kids who usually fight, worked beautifully in groups. Each child was truly happy and focused on the activity. Visual and tactile sensation is essential for these children in their learning experiences in order to retain much of the lesson. Unfortunately, although the school I work in has an arts curriculum, my children get computer technology education the entire year and they are excluded from the rotating art block that all general education students get in the same school. I was told nothing could be changed this year. So, this once office, now science lab/math classroom/ELA classroom/social studies classroom must also become an art room. I now need the supplies to make it happen.
I have planned several science projects to aide in the understanding of atoms/molecules, using clay. English should be supplemented with visual illustrations, made by the children who have great difficulty with writing. We are studying Egypt soon and the possibilities of using art projects are endless.
I truly believe art supplies will bring such joy to our classroom, in addition to making learning for many bright frustrated children a more manageable task.
Thank you for your consideration.
