Art Supplies for Preschoolers with Special Needs

My students need tempera, watercolors, finger paint and other different types of paint to inspire creativity. They also need lots of construction, watercolor, diffusing paper and other paper for creating their masterpieces and a drying rack to keep work safe.

My Students

Art is a major part of our day in preschool. My young students love to paint, draw, and cut! I love to think of new projects that utilize art for learning, sensory experiences, and creative expression.

My students are 3 and 4-year-olds with special needs.

The children have a variety of disabilities, including Down syndrome, Autism, developmental delay, and language disorders. I also have a few students who are typically developing who serve as peer models for language and socialization. My students come from culturally diverse families and many have socio-economic challenges, as well. My school is a Title I school and we have a large population of children with special needs and English Language Learners.

My Project

My students don't get to go to art class, like many other children in our school, so it is up to me to expose them to a variety of painting and drawing tools and materials. As a child, art was always my favorite subject, so I want to give my young students the chance to see themselves as artists. During our learning centers I try offer an art project each day, to provide children who may struggle to express themselves verbally or socially another method to communicate their thoughts and feelings.

Having tempera, watercolors, finger and other different types of paint, lots of construction, watercolor, diffusing and other paper, a drying rack, and other high quality art supplies in my classroom will allow students the freedom to express themselves in a variety of media.

Right now the only paper for art projects that is provided for me is thin copy paper, which is not is not ideal for young children, especially those with motor challenges or poor impulse control. Appropriate papers for painting and drawing will eliminate the frustration of ripped and torn papers. Children will be able to create multiple projects for home and school.
