This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We place such a heavy emphasis on math, language arts, writing, science and social studies. How about art history, learning artistic skills and concepts? I want my students to be well rounded and teaching art is one way to attain that goal.

Most of my students are second language learners.

About 95 percent of the student body is Hispanic. My school is located in a low socio-economic area where I grew up as a child. We have a number of parents who volunteer at the school on a regular basis.

My Project

My students love my art lessons. However, we are currently limited to using crayons and some old broken oil pastels for creating art projects. I teach art by not only instructing the students on art skills, but by connecting the works of the Masters of art in my lessons. This provides the students with art history and art concepts while recreating works of arts with their own individual style.

These oil pastels will allow the students to create a multitude of art works with a medium they have limited experience utilizing at home and in the classroom.

Wouldn't it be great if a child discovers his/her talent for art or is able to recognize the works of one of the great artists while on a field trip, watching a movie or reading a magazine?
