Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are resilient learners and are pushing through to continue their learning at home. Many are faced with an incredible amount of stress and hardship due to our current situation. They come from one of the poorest neighborhoods in our city that is often riddled with violence and police activity right outside their doors. Now, with them being at home all day, I worry about their mental health.
My students want to succeed and push out of the vicious cycle of poverty their families have been subject to.
They are sweet and kind, but with many rough edges due to trauma and violence in their homes and neighborhoods. Nonetheless, I have high hopes and expectations for them despite our current crisis.
My Project
My students have little to no experience with or access to the visual arts. Especially now that we are learning at home, many don't even have even basic crayons and markers to participate in activities. These materials would allow me to add to a package of art materials I am providing to them. Through these and the other materials I have gathered, I will introduce them to painting on a canvas and using acrylic paints.
I believe in the power that participating in the arts can have on one's mental health.
These materials will go a long way to help my students not only experience art but also use it as an aid to their mental health.
