Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are learning to trust their creative instincts and develop critical thinking skills. Every day, we build more and more successes in the art room! There are still some "I can't"s, and we are working on turning them into "I can"s and "I am excited to"s!
I teach art to K-8 students in a wonderful, large urban school with very limited resources.
There is a very strong sense of community at my school. The student population is ~750 students and many of my students are bilingual or primarily Spanish speakers.
My Project
My middle schoolers will be using the iPads to do research on a variety of subjects (i.e., looking up an artist for an artist study or looking up a picture of an object for reference). We will also use the iPads to translate English to Spanish for some of my students who are not yet fluent in English.
My elementary school students will be using the pencils in everyday writing, sketching and drawing to plan amazing artwork! The pencil sharpeners will be used to sharpen our new pencils. These students will also be using the liquid watercolors in the spray bottles to create a graffiti style effect in their artwork. They will also be using the black construction paper and construction paper crayons to design underwater seascapes.
Through this project, I will be able to introduce my younger learners to media that they have never used before (construction paper crayons and liquid watercolors) and will be able to facilitate more independent learning and discovery with my older learners through the use of iPads in my classroom.
My class provides a safe, creative outlet that my students do not have much access to, otherwise. All donations help me to provide more for my students!
