it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Chicago Public School in the Logan Square neighborhood serving 351 Pre-K through 8th grade students. Many of our families are low income and speak another language, and we also have diverse learners as well as a hearing impaired population. The art room is a safe place for these children to tell their stories. They learn to express themselves and to think creatively in a classroom where many of the lessons have a theme of tolerance, peace, and embracing diversity.
My Project
An art room needs some fundamental materials to keep it organized and materials accessible for creating. Many of the materials in this project can be used for a variety of projects.
The best part of creating artwork is having many materials to work and experiment with.
With many materials, and hundreds of students coming through one classroom each week organization is a must. I strive to give my students autonomy and to teach them to collaborate both in creating and maintaining a safe art studio.
Caddies provide a way to store materials for each table group, but can be carried around easily by students to distribute and collect. Scissors are essential to develop fine motor skills, and create beautiful collages or work with fibers. Masking tape can be used for painting, sculpture, bookmaking, and collage. Acrylic paint is permanent and is best for recycled sculptures as well as middle school paintings. File folders make for a streamlined and simple way to organize table groups and homerooms artwork in a way that saves time when distributing/collaging. Pipe cleaners are a wonderful material for all ages and are a crafting essential.
