My Students
Working at a public charter school that is dedicated to the arts has given me the opportunity to work with so many wonderfully talented students!
One aspect that makes us unique as a district is the integration of art into as many of our subjects and classes as we can!
There is no shortage of artistic pursuits for our students, and its amazing to see the creativity of so many in areas such as dance, culinary, visual art, and music!
My Project
As a school counselor, one of my jobs is to assist students in finding healthy coping strategies that they can utilize in various environments, be it at school, home, or the outdoors. My hope is to introduce the art of fly fishing to my students and show them how beneficial it can be as a means to reduce stress, increase mindfulness, and perhaps even improve self confidence.
I don't want to just teach them to cast a fly rod.
I want my students to know how to read the water, understand the diet of the fish they're pursuing and choosing the best fly to "match the hatch." I also want them to learn the process of material selection that is involved in tying a fly, learning the part they can play in conservation, how to properly catch and release a fish, tying simple knots, and understanding what it means to be truly patient! I don't think there is a bigger test of patience then trying to untie a wind knot in your line.
I also want our students to be stewards of the environment, and lead by example. Leaving an area cleaner then when they found it.
Our group will consist of students from 7th-12th grade, and they all have the opportunity to do their part in improving our local fisheries and waterways while learning this centuries old form and style of art, and mindful benefits of the outdoors!
