Before there were used for ask favors to the saints or to Jesus Christ. The heart is only one of the figures used with that purpose but there are also arms, legs, eyes, etc. because the favors were for health. The people used to buy them and then hung them in a \"retablo\" inside of the church beside one of the saints. Then, the person pride for the health of the leg, arm, or the part of the body that need to be fixed. \r\n\r\nWith the time, and because the heart was beautiful, the people started using them for decoration inside of their homes. Hopefully between that and the book club I host on Fridays, students will start showing more interest in my classroom library.
