Art of Flight at Pacific Aviation Museum 2019

Help me give my students a field trip to Pacific Aviation Museum to learn about the art of flight.

My Students

My students grew up in the heart of Waimanalo, located on the Windward side of Oahu, in the state of Hawaii. This place is a very close knit community. My students come from struggling families, and they just need a lot of love! We work every day to be college ready, and prepare ourselves for the real world.

Our school is located in a predominately rural, low-income neighborhood, with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Islander ancestry.

My Project

At the beginning of aviation, daredevil pilots would perform death-defying stunts. Known as Barnstorming, these brave pilots created a sense of awe for human flight. The crew of the Pacific Aviation Museum will create the same sense of wonder for aeronautical achievement in their educational Barnstorming Tours.

This one-of-a-kind program demonstrates aviation concepts that are covered in 6th-grade science.

Students learn the essentials of flight and then “fly” a large-model of a World War II P-40 simulator. A portable wind tunnel demonstrates the movement of wind over an airfoil, and various tabletop experiments help students understand Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion and the Bernoulli Principle. As a grand finale, students will tour the Pacific Aviation Museum and see aircraft from around the world and past eras. They will learn of the historical significance of Pearl Harbor and Oahu during World War II and beyond.

Next, students will participate in a flight brief and fly in a flight simulator.

Finally, students will explore the traveling MathAlive! exhibit that provides students with hands-on opportunities to experience math in everyday life.
