I teach STEAM in a low-income, Title I school, where most of my students live in poverty. Most either live in low income apartments, or are in multigenerational households for economic reasons. Despite their many obstacles to learning, these students are motivated to learn and excel when provided opportunities and materials to do so. I work hard to create diverse lessons that utilize both technology and hands-on activities to create meaningful learning experiences.
Unfortunately, my classroom budget is very limited and so my students don't have access to technology and materials readily available in more affluent schools.
As the STEAM teacher, I desire to provide every student in the school the means to explore science in new ways despite financial limitations or the myriad of challenges they face outside of school.
My Project
What does the poster on the wall sound like? What beat does the orange in your lunch make? This incredible technology will allow my students to answer these questions! They will be able to hear the colors of their world and use them to compose music.
These rings will give my students the ability to create music with a tap of their finger on any surface!
It is the perfect way to integrate musical scales and the light spectrum in my science lessons. With these tools, my students will be able to compose a song using the photos in their science book or the maps hanging on the classroom wall. I am excited to let them compose songs using our science materials as notes and the curriculum as inspiration. What does the water cycle song sound like in our classroom? My students are about to compose it!
