Art, Math & Add Some 3-D Printing! Oh, My!

My Students

My students are both mathematicians and artists that range from 7th through 12th grade in a variety of courses: Algebra 1A, 8th-grade art cycle, year-round 9-12th grade art, and a remediation/enrichment period for mathematics that changes from 7th-9th grade.

My students love to create and have a passion for learning.

Through math and art, my students are learning there are several paths to take when approaching problems and that all problems can have more than one solution.

My Project

My hope is that through this project, I will use my areas of expertise in Math and Art connected with the technology of a 3-D printer to improve student achievement and interest through meaningful, creative, problem solving experiences in both my Art and Math classes.

My project empowers my art students to use the Engineering Design Process to create a 3-D printed collaborative Alexander Calder mobile.

Calder was a American sculptor from our home state of Pennsylvania who is best known for making kinetic wire mobiles that achieved balance through weight distribution and suspension. Asymmetrical Mobile to be hung in the schools media center for all to enjoy. Understanding concepts of balance in both art and math and kinetic energy in science will be goals through this learning experience.
