This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a public high school in New York City that has been doing remote and hybrid learning over the past year. Now that we are coming back to in-person learning I want to give my students as much exposure and artistic creativity as I can! These students are very driven and work so hard to do projects even with little materials. Students are in my class as Sophomores for their required art class and then I have some that choose to take Advanced Art as seniors.
Many of my students did not take art classes in middle school, and therefore have limited experience and confidence with art.
I focus on facilitating lessons that allow for students to tell their own stories and express themselves. These students are so creative and would be able to create such great artwork with enough supplies to truly explore multiple mediums!
My Project
After over a year of remote and hybrid learning, my students are finally all coming back into the classroom! As an art teacher, I often hear the, "I can't make art" or "Ms. I can't draw. I can't do this." Especially since many did not have art in middle school. But after some time, students realize that our classroom is a community that supports all art exploration. I have students that come into the art room excited to start a painting for the first time or try a new art material!
This year I am focusing on supporting my students by giving them access to as many different techniques and materials, while also encouraging them to tell their stories and build community.
With these supplies, students will have the opportunity to use a lightbox to help with designing drafts of zines, drawing pens and pencils will be used for illustration and observational drawing projects, and yarn is a great tool for yarn paintings as well as multimedia collages, sculptures, and collagraph printmaking. I want these students to have access to as many different materials as I can so they can leave here have a breadth of experiences!
