Art Literacy for Students with Autism

My students need books about art to build our visual arts library including Not a Stick, Not a Box, and The Dot.

My Students

I teach art at a small elementary school in Brooklyn, NY for students with severe disabilities. The students in my school are between five and eleven years old. There are thirteen 6:1:1 classes (6 students, 1 teacher, 1 paraprofessional) and one 12:1:1 class (12 students, 1 teacher, 1 paraprofessional).

Most of the students in my school have Autism Spectrum Disorder, but that doesn't stop them from being amazing and unique artists.

My students really love creating art and exploring new art making materials. They thrive in an environment that is well organized and structured.

My Project

I am continuing to develop and re-vitalizing the Art Program at my school. The program needs a variety of books related to art to build my students' art literacy.

In order to build art literacy and the ability to discuss works of art, my students need books based the elements of art, stories about the process of making art and art history books that are geared towards younger readers.

Books about the elements of art, such as lines, hue, and shape, help to introduce those concepts to my students. Stories about the process of making art help my young artist to identify the different ways that artists work and create. Art history books that are written with young readers in mind, give my students access to a variety of famous art work and art history, but in language that they are able to understand.
