I teach Visual Art (specifically Commercial Art and Illustration) to a group of about 150 amazing students at a large urban Title 1 high school. They are all amazing because of what they face each day outside of the classroom and still show up every day giving 110%. They are the strongest group of people I've met and they inspire me to do better every day. For many, art classes are where they feel the safest and where they feel heard. They express themselves freely through their art.
The students are a diverse group, ranging in students with a 1 to 1 instructional aide, to students who are college-bound.
Due to the location of our campus, students come from all over the city. 100% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch, which means that many of our students come from homes with financial difficulties. This makes many students unable to purchase the materials needed to be successful.
Since we will be in either full or partial distance learning this school year, my students need art supplies they can use at home. Many students struggled with this during our spring distance learning session.
My Project
This year school is going to look very different with all kids learning at home for at least the first few months and needing to have personal, no-share materials once we're back to in-person learning. Art classes are so tough to teach distance style, especially because many kids don't have materials at home, or the means to easily get them. Our art department is hoping to bundle basic supplies for students to use at home for their art making success at home, for class and for themselves! These materials will give access to learning and material use that they did not have during spring distance learning.
Each kit will include color pencils, brush-tip markers, watercolor pan, fine-liner pen, eraser, and pencil sharpeners.
From my classroom, stock students will get a drawing pencil and a sketchbook, all bundled nicely in a zippered pouch!
