Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My awesome second graders come from a very low socioeconomic background with the majority falling below the poverty line. They are mainly English language learners (80%) and many of them live in homes which house multiple families under the same roof. The median income is well below poverty level, with some being homeless. Some of these seven- and eight-year olds have the sole responsibility of taking care of their younger siblings while their parents are working, with many parents working more than one job. Others are latchkey children.
Our school is Title I and 90% of the children receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
In addition to the many challenges that these hard-working students face, they also are coping with the fact that our school is situated in a high crime area with frequent gang activity. My children have extremely limited access to technology in their homes, yet with all these obstacles, my students come to school with much enthusiasm and an eager desire to learn.
My Project
“Art encourages children to think, developing skills and confidence as they go!” -Mary Ann Kohl and Barbara Zaborowski. I firmly believe in this statement and that is why I strive to bring art to my classroom on a weekly basis. Students have the freedom to express themselves without fear of making errors as there are no mistakes in art. As a classroom teacher working with at-risk students, I feel exposure to art curriculum is a way to afford these learners opportunities to express themselves while creating something they are proud to show. However, within the last few years, art has been pushed to the bottom of the list as it is not nationally recognized as an important curriculum. As a result, I am constantly purchasing art supplies out of my own pocket because I want my students to have the opportunity to explore, be creative and express themselves through art enrichment. This is why I am requesting a few art items to help me continue to bring art to my classroom. Some of these items are clay, markers and paint brushes so that they can create their own dinosaur fossils then using the brushes to paint and markers to decorate them. I am also asking for some bleeding art tissue paper, mod podge, fabric paint, origami paper and multicultural construction paper for my students to use and create things learned in class. Thus, I am asking for your kind donations so art will continue to live and carry on in the heart of every child.
