This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I can only draw what I see" Claude Monet. But my students can't even do that without the proper equipment.
My students are in an inner city school in Southern California.
They are talented and curious to express their thoughts in ways other than writing. They are second language learners and self expression is difficult for them. Art gives them freedom.
My Project
I use art in the classroom to provide understanding of content and to encourage my students to critically look at the world around them Art is often a safe haven where they can freely express themselves. However, to accomplish this we need the proper tools for the job. How can they begin to understand what a manuscript is and what difficult work a scribe did, before the invention of movable type? Calligraphy pens and ink will bring the dark ages to life for them.
With paper made for water colors they can experiment with the paint and the paper won't disintegrate on them.
My students will only be able to draw simple designs to express themselves, without the necessary materials.
Their imagination and abilities are limitless, why limit their equipment? They need to right tools for the job.
