Art Is a Social-Emotional Window!

My Students

The transitional kindergarten students at our school have been in distance learning for almost an entire school year. Transitional Kindergarten's primary goal is to provide students with social-emotional learning skills to succeed in school and life. Evidence-based research states that social-emotional learning significantly impacts a child's ability to develop a sense of self and emotional understanding. Art allows young children to express thoughts and feelings that they may not have the vocabulary to explain. When children are actively engaged in art, they are learning self-regulation skills. These skills build a foundation for later social-emotional success.

This DonorsChoose project will provide 16 students with art materials like paint sticks to enable children to be self-aware and learn to self-regulate through engaging in art.

My Project

We will be undertaking an Eric Carle author study. Students will hear the beautiful stories of Eric Carle, discuss the characters' social-emotional situation, and engage in art to express themselves! Paint provides an excellent medium for young children who may not have the vocabulary to express themselves but can learn to do so through art. As early childhood educators, it is our job to expose children to multiple ways to learn self-expression. These skills lead to a longevity of strategies to deal with stress and challenges throughout a person's life!
