it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever sat down to draw, write, or complete some sort of project and drawn a blank? Don't you hate when your brain suddenly feels like a big empty thought bubble floating inches above your head? Our young artists need to find inspiration and build language skills at the same time!
Each week I teach 700 students, kindergarten through eighth grade, who are eager to express their creativity and try out new and exciting art forms.
My students, largely first and second generation Americans, are growing up in a large urban school district, whose budget cuts resulted in the suspension of our school's Art program for many years. Despite being run out of a lunchroom, our young program has already produced thousands of creative works that brighten both the hallways of the school and the faces of budding artists and family members.
More than 80% of our young artist are from Spanish speaking homes and many have little English exposure before entering Kindergarten.
My Project
In our primary art classes (K-2) we use books to gain inspiration for both directed and independent art projects, help us master new concepts, learn about important artists, and continue learning throughout free choice time.
Students love books that bring concepts like color theory to life, and adding a story to art lessons helps promote the emerging literacy of young (almost) readers!
Many of my students are English language learners who need to be be able to access materials in their primary language. Throughout the year we use both inspiring English stories and Spanish versions of some of our favorite art books. These books help deepen students understanding of art concepts and expand their creative thinking skills, while supporting overall literacy.
These books will bring inspiration to all of our young artists, and ensure that English Language Learners are provided the same opportunities to access information and inspiration as their English fluent peers.
