Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have always believed in infusing art into content curriculum. I teach 6th grade Language Arts, Social Studies, and an Introduction to Art class at a middle school with 94% of the students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. In the past, I have incorporated art content with Ancient Civilizations and language arts to make the material more interesting and to create an interdisciplinary unit. For this coming new school year which starts in July, I plan to incorporate the aspects of Ancient Egyptian culture into a art unit on pyramids and ancient burial processes. I am designing a unit for my students to build their own pyramids and make a sample sarcophagus and experience how mummies are made and the importance of this practice to the Ancient Egyptians, which is an important CA standard in the 6th grade curriculum.
In order to fulfill my interdisciplinary unit, I am in need of many basic art and classroom supplies, such as markers, colored pencils, poster boards, construction paper, etc. I have 36 students in each class and with limited supplies on hand, it is hard for me to carry out these projects.
I feel that art is very important and if it can be infused with content curriculum, I believe it will only make student motivation better and impact their studies.
