Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic kids eager to learn. Over 90% of our students come from low-income households. A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless, living in garages or multiple families in one residence. My kids' parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write, and learn!
My students worry about coming to school and staying safe; and yet, they still want to come to school to explore, learn and grow.
I am teaching online and trying to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science and social studies.
My Project
I want to engage my students in learning activities that are fun and colorful. Learning online is new for most children. Watching a screen and listening to a teacher for long periods of time can be difficult for 5 and 6 year-olds.
Using colorful paper and paints to reinforce our lessons will help to keep my students engaged in our activities and maximize their learning by utilizing visual and kinesthetic skills.
It will help them to communicate and socialize with each other as they share their projects that they become so proud of. It is such a joy to watch my students beam with pride and confidence!
My students will have so much fun while they use their fine motor muscles to actively participate in our lessons by cutting, twisting, tearing, gluing, painting, brushing and ripping paper. Creating colorful projects to represent our lessons will help my students socially and emotionally. They will gain positive self-esteem and feelings of self-worth. Bright colors and art lift spirits and engage students in positive conversations. Active participation will help my students to remember what they have learned.
