Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic, shy, inquisitive 1st graders. Ethnically our school is about 55% Latino, 20% African-American, and 10% Asian, and 5% White. About 50% of my students are English Language Learners of varying abilities, and the rest are native English speakers. They attend a Title I, inner-city school in a community oriented neighborhood. My students and their families enjoy participating in school sponsored events.
My students desire to be challenged academically, grow exponentially, and learn mindfully.
In spite of the economic disparities and other difficulties my students face, I believe that they all can achieve greatness.
My Project
Having grown up playing music and participating in arts classes, I know the value of having arts integrated into the classroom experience and core academic areas. I want my students to have similar experiences in my classroom, and to have an appreciation of art while covering core academic content areas.
Having access to art helps children to expand their imaginations, plan for a finished product, and think critically about their own ideas.
These skills transfer to all academic areas. Through the use of visual arts, my students will be able to show their learning process and understanding of a given academic skill. With the use of construction paper and water colors, my students will explore lines and shapes through meaningful arts integrated lessons. My students will use watercolors and acrylic paints to dive deeper into vocabulary and literature studies as well as to explore historical figures. My students will use visual arts lessons integrated with math, literature, writing, and science to ensure a well-rounded 1st grade learning experience.
