Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 1st grade at a fantastic urban school in a working class community. Nearly 100% of the students are on free or reduced lunch and most are English language learners. They are a great group of kids that are always eager to learn new things and share them with everyone they know.

Art History and art in general are slowly fading from elementary school classrooms. Teachers have a hard time "fitting" art into their busy schedules. However, art history has always been a passion of mine, and I love sharing this passion with my students.

I have found that the best way to get students excited about art history is through literature. Children love learning about artists such as Frida Kahlo and Vincent Van Gogh while listening to both fiction and non-fiction books (like the ones I have requested). They enjoy seeing the artwork and discussing the lives of the artists. After reading these books together they become very knowledgeable art historians who are able to compare artists and trends through the years.

Art History is a critical element in my curriculum. I find that it is a fantastic way to stimulate oral language development while establishing a foundation in cultural history. With your help, my students, who rarely have the opportunity to visit museums and galleries, will be able to learn about and love the world of art.
