My Project
The children in my kindergarten class did not have the wonderful experiences of creative art in Pre-K as they should have being that they were at home during the pandemic. After the pandemic, they started kindergarten in a classroom that was over populated (30 children) and a rigorous curriculum to ensure that they are academically to par, being that most of them had no pre-k experience. So needless to say, there was not much time for creative art in kindergarten for them either. So....I came aboard on January 18, 2022 as the third kindergarten teacher to split up the 2 classrooms that carried 60 children. I was put in a "classroom shell" that had nothing in it other than the curriculum materials, books, a few puzzles, a couple of manipulative toys and the furniture. Being that the 2nd quarter had already started, there were no funds available for anything else. BUT, the children have been thriving academically, socially and emotionally in their new classroom environment-and they absolutely LOVE the creative art activities that I have pulled together out of my own pocket; they THRIVE off of it, it breaks up the academic monotony of their school week and I truly believe it has helped some of the behavioral issues that were present and has initiated a new love of school for these children. I work at a school where a lot of my families are low income, they can not afford art supplies even for family engagement activities that I have sent home; I have supplied many of them with the supplies needed for their child to be able to complete the class projects we have done thus far, i.e, our "120th day of school' project.
