When I walk into my room each morning, I have eighteen pairs of eyes eagerly awaiting directions and wondering what kind of craft we will be doing that day. My students are overflowing with creativity and they are always begging for free time to merely create.
My school is in an extremely rural community.
A majority of my students live below the poverty line. Luckily, my students receive free breakfast as well as free lunch each day. As a teacher, I love being a positive influence for these students and helping shape their young minds. However, I feel that it is the students who, in fact, teach me sometimes. My students are full of creativity and need a creative outlet as a means to express themselves. Many of my students do not express their feelings on the outside. Drawing, creating, and painting are an alternate means for these students to share their feelings as well as ideas.
My Project
My students will use these materials daily as a center. Each day, my students have one hour of free choice centers. Currently, the art center merely consists of pencils, papers and crayons. If given the materials, I have no doubt that my students would be overjoyed to have an easel to draw and create on, glue and scissors to make paper mache items, erasers to fix those little mistakes and much more. The passion that my students have expressed towards art has moved me so much that it has motivated me to acquire the materials they so desperately need.
An improved art center will improve the quality of our center time.
I believe that students learn by creating, drawing and merely using their imagination. If given the chance and resources, I believe that my students would thrive! Not to mention that I would have a lot of fabulous work to display in my classroom!
