Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher in California. Approximately 60 percent of the students at our school are African American, about 30 percent are Latino, and the remaining 10 percent are a mix of Pakistani, Ethiopian, Anglo American and others. I always have many talented children in my classes, and I am always looking to expand the educational program I deliver.

As in all areas of school supply, there is an area of need for art materials. Yes, in our classroom we do have some supplies: standard crayons (8 colors), standard newsprint drawing paper, white office printer paper, construction paper in standard colors (for example, one shade of green, one shade of brown etc...). Yes, kids feel fortunate to have these materials. But listen: Underprivileged kids ought to have the same access to education that rich or middle class kids have. To my mind, it is a moral obligation.

Students will use these various art materials to find new dimensions of creative expression. True! Students will be able to explore color and line with the pencils and crayons and pastels and watercolors I have ordered; they will be able to explore texture and shape with the templates and rubbing plates; they will be able to make collage with the great variety of printed paper; and they will find their own skin color in the multicultural colored pencils.

It is always a great pleasure for me to see students engaged in lessons that have real meaning for them. In my classroom, art is always connected with a theme that my students are currently studying. The supplies that you provide will form an important part of the meaningful, culturally relevant curriculum that I strive to deliver. Rest assured: your donation will make a real difference.
