My Students
I am an art teacher, and I love my job. I work in a self-contained school for children with special needs. Each and every one of my students have a physical or mental disability, or sometimes even both. Art is an important part of their school environment; it is how they express themselves.
Since my students have these disabilities, I need to adapt the materials to meet their needs.
Many of the art supplies and materials needed for their special needs are more expensive than the regular ones. Do-A-Dot markers which I have requested are large and easier for many of them to hold properly. The thick markers are also easier to draw with for many of them. My students range from ages 11 to 21, they have a wide range of disabilities as well such as cerebral palsy, autism, downs syndrome to name a few.
My Project
The materials I requested will benefit the whole school since I teach every student at least once a week. They love art and it makes them feel good about themselves and boosts their confidence. Art is truly something they can accomplish, and I exhibit it all over our school. I enter their work into different contests throughout the year. Our school is open 12 months a year, so we really need a tremendous amount of supplies. The parents also benefit because the artwork gets sent home, and makes them proud of their children.
Donating to this proposal will ensure the art making of these very "special" students, for next year and beyond.
These kids are special and need to feel like they are just like everyone else; they need the opportunity to create and express themselves. With these supplies, we will be able to explore new projects and reach new heights. Please give these kids a chance to say with their hands what they may not be able to verbalize.
