This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
If they don't have it, it's my job to get it for them... My students are predominately Black and Latinx teens who travel from some of New York City's low-income neighborhoods to our school on the Upper West Side. The journey from their neighborhoods to our school is full of conflict and contrasts. They pass scores of exclusive private schools, zoned schools and screened schools in order attend our unscreened, Title I school. The vast majority of our student population qualifies for free/reduced lunch. They sometimes come to school without the necessary supplies.
There are many factors that could serve to impede the success of my students, however, they consistently push through and persevere.
Every day, they come to school- ready to question, ready to learn.
My Project
I am seeking funds to purchase a heat press machine and transfer sheets. I will be working with Global Cares, the community service club I facilitate, in conjunction with WE and the Visual Arts department wherein they will delve into research of a human rights issue presented by WE. Through their investigation and discovery, they will create a service activity promoting advocacy or engagement that is intended to help address/rectify the issue in question. Issues include: access to clean water, access to education and health care, equality and inclusion, etc. Additionally, students will work with the Visual Arts department to compose a graphic intended to bring attention to the human rights issue in question. I would like to provide students with the opportunity to transpose their design creations on t-shirts as a means of bringing awareness to these causes. For this, my students and I will require a digital heat press machine and heat press transfer sheets.
