Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are predominately Black and Latino teens who travel through Brooklyn's low-income, yet rapidly gentrifying, neighborhoods to attend our school. The journey from their neighborhoods to our school is full of conflict and contrasts. They pass scores of luxury high rise buildings and overpriced coffee shops. The large majority of our student population qualifies for free/reduced lunch. They sometimes come to school without the necessary supplies.
Despite the challenges my students may face, they come to school everyday, eager artists, ready to learn and create.
Everyday, I am amazed by the ways in which my students transform into artists when they enter my room, telling their stories visually.
My Project
I am seeking funds to purchase a heat press machine and transfer sheets. I will be working with my Visual Arts students on an interdisciplinary unit in conjunction with the humanities department wherein they will delve into research of a current human rights violation and compose a visual intended to bring attention to the human rights violation in question. As a summative assessment, students will have the opportunity to transpose their design creations on t-shirts as a means of bringing awareness to these causes. For this, my students and I will require a digital heat press machine and heat press transfer sheets.
