Art for Everyone! Creating in an Adaptive Art Room

Help me give my students diverse sensory experiences through sand, dough and clay! Students' fine motor skill development will progress while they are having fun exploring and creating with new tools and art materials!

My Project

The core group of students who will benefit from these supplies are my students with special needs, specifically those diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. These students are a wonderful group of children, and they are capable of achieving great things when given the right materials under the correct circumstances.

Art is such a wonderful subject for students to excel at because it encourages independent and creative thinking while developing fine motor skills.

In addition, the art room is a great place to foster social-emotional learning and it allows time for kids to work together. And I just began teaching at this school with these students, I realized quickly there were ways in which I could be a more effective teacher and make a bigger impact on each individual child.

The sensory dough, sand, and Magna Tiles requested through this project will allow students to rotate through meaningful centers while they wait to work with me in small groups or one-on-one. In addition, some of these items are adapted to fit the needs of individual disabilities, such as larger handles on brushes or softer dough to squeeze. Art is for everyone and that is something I truly believe and practice every day. I hope this project gets funded so I can fulfill my mission of providing a high quality arts education to every student who walks into my classroom.
