My Students
I am an Art teacher in a self-contained special education school. Many of my students have Autism and other disabilities, both physical and cognitive. Art is an important part of their school day. I like to do a wide range of projects and reach out to all my students and put smiles on their faces.
All my students have one or more disabilities, so art tends to be a subject they can participate freely in.
Many of my students are not able to read or write, but they are able to express themselves in their art work. In my class they can be themselves and have a wonderful time. I get tons of hugs and kisses every day! Since we are in a self contained school, all my students are special education; therefore I need to modify my lessons and art materials to fit everyone's physical and mental abilities. This is not an easy task. We need more and varied art materials in order to do so. I also teach the entire school. That means a lot of art supplies. These kids need a chance to express themselves and feel confidant that they are able to create such beautiful artwork. I hang up their work all over the school for all to see and admire.
My Project
Last year we started our first "Annual Art Gallery" show, and it was a huge success. We prepared for months with paintings, note cards and calendars. We were able to raise over a thousand dollars to use for art supplies and materials. Many politicians from the community were invited and purchased art pieces from our gallery. It was a special event. We had appetizers and "mocktails," alcohol-free cocktails which were served by our students throughout the event. It felt just like a real gallery opening! We are planning another event again this year. Therefore we need to request acrylic paint and other supplies for the event. We are hoping to have another successful gallery show again this year. Our art gallery was such a big event it was featured on the cover of our local newspaper. Please help us to get another gallery opening off the ground this year as well!
My students need these kinds of special events in order to expand their horizons and boost their self-esteem.
Art is something that they are able to achieve and do well. It is something that they can feel good about and proud of themselves for. There aren't many things that come easily to my students. Art happens to be a little less of a struggle for them to achieve. When I hang up their work they are so proud of themselves they just glow!
