This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse population, both ethnically and socioeconomically. Our school is nestled in the middle of the city close to Hollywood, and we service second language learners, standard English learners, and have a large special needs population, including a long established school for the blind. My 4th graders include students who are identified gifted and talented, ELD, and special needs. Our class is a creative collection of mathematicians, athletes, artists, and authors, and we are all a community of learners who love to engage in creative and critical thinking projects. As distance learners this year, it will be essential to get much needed, hands-on supplies to their homes so that our children are not bound to their technology gadgets more than 4 hours a day.

My Project

As a STEAM school, we take pride in providing arts education. I know that for me as a child, visual arts lessons were an essential part of my love of learning. During this time of distance learning, students need these lessons more than ever as both a way to ensure time off of gadgets, but also as a productive way to express oneself, provide an outlet for mindfulness, and to just have fun! My school has done their best to provide a variety of supplies for our students’ take home bags, but enough art supplies for the entire school just wasn’t possible. This donation will ensure that my 4th graders have the opportunity to engage in Visual Arts lessons right away this semester.
