Ms. Donaldson from Denver CO is requesting Art Supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need reusable art-making activities like Etch-a-Sketch drawing pads, Spirograph drawing games, and water drawing boards to practice and hone skills. They also need color sticks to be able to create their beautiful artworks.
"Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life." - Pablo Picasso
Communicating can be tricky, especially when no one speaks your language; thankfully we all speak the language of art.
It is my goal to provide my students with the ability to problem solve and think creatively so they are able to communicate even if no one speaks their language. Our population is comprised of 58% of students that do not originally speak English. This includes many Spanish speaking families, but also refugee families from the Middle East speaking only Farsi. Additionally, roughly 80% of our school qualifies for free and reduced lunch, meaning my students do not always have access at how to culturally enriching activities such as art.
Despite the socioeconomic truths facing theses students, they are always smiling with a kind word on their tongues and their families are supportive and full of love. It is my desire to tap into the support from families to help fuel my students love for the arts.
So many of the resources we use in the art room are consumable, paper, paints, colors. These constantly need to be replaced. With this project, I am hoping to start to build a bank of resources that are renewable. Especially the Etch-a-Sketch games and meditation water drawing boards.
The Etch-a-Sketch was a staple in my childhood and the youth of many.
My students were so excited with there first opportunity to use an etch-a-sketch that one was simply not enough. All of my 550 students were so excited to use this different form of drawing tool, I would love to reward their interest and excitement by providing them more opportunities to engage with this tool.
I hope to broaden my students' experience of what constitutes art and the ideas that art has to be permanent pen on paper creation. Sometimes you just need to practice and let the picture fade away.
