Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our sweet students come from diverse backgrounds and bring a large array of experiences to our classrooms and school. One thing they all have in common is using their imaginations and creating a happy world within our walls.
Daily, our students overcome a variety of basic challenges - getting breakfast, making it to school, having homework completed.
Our school is a Title I urban school with the most diverse population in our district. Over 80% of our students qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch. School becomes a safe haven for these scholars - where expectations are the same every day, and their basic needs are met. While they come to school to learn, they thrive when they are given the opportunity to utilize a variety of resources to make learning real and fun. This is what keeps them coming back and keeps them hooked into learning the rigorous academic standards.
My Project
There is so much research that supports the value of arts education in the classroom. These art supplies---paper, glue, graphite pencils, erasers, storage, scissors---will help us offer a well-rounded art education to all students at our school. These supplies will support art projects based on literature that has been read by the students to enhance their academic learning and foster a love for arts.
An education without the arts is inadequate.
Learning through arts in collaboration with other subjects helps to teach students innumerable lessons including things like practice makes perfect, the truth that small differences can have large effects, and that collaboration leads to creativity. The arts also teach children that there are several paths to take when approaching problems and that all problems can have more than one solution. Art is critical to student development.
