Art Comes to Life at Grounds for Sculpture

My Students

I teach in a Title I school where most of the students can't afford lunch and come to school without a backpack, coat, or even a pencil. For a lot of my students, art class is the only place where they can relax and find an outlet to express themselves. They are creative, down to earth, and full of heart. As their art teacher, I strive to create a safe place where they can be themselves, show off their talents, and gain confidence in their artistic abilities.

My Project

Most of the students at my school have never set foot in an art museum. Many of them would never find the opportunity to visit a place like Grounds for Sculpture if not for a school trip like this. This trip would give students the chance to interact with the arts and would inspire their creations in the art room.

Grounds For Sculpture is a 42-acre sculpture park, museum, and arboretum founded on the site of the former New Jersey State Fairgrounds.

Opened to the public in 1992, it has become one of the premier cultural destinations in New Jersey, welcoming and enchanting over three million visitors since then.

Founded by artist and philanthropist Seward Johnson, the nonprofit Grounds For Sculpture presents and conserves an exceptional collection of contemporary sculpture, offers outstanding programming for all ages and provides rotating exhibitions in six indoor galleries.
