Art Class Seeking Creative Reference Library! (& Wellness Supplies!)

Help me give my students class specific art books (such as The History of Illustration) and unit focused resource books in order to build our library. Also, support our classroom cleanliness and well-being by funding our cleaning supplies.

My Students

I teach Visual Art (specifically Commercial Art and Illustration) to a group of about 150 amazing students at a large urban title 1 high school. They are all amazing because of what they face each day outside of the classroom, and still show up every day giving 110%. They are the strongest group of people I've met, and they inspire me to do better every day. For many, art classes are where they feel the safest and where they feel heard. They express themselves freely through their art.

The students are a diverse group, ranging in students with a 1 to 1 instructional aide, to students who are college bound.

Due to the location of our campus, students come from all over the city. 79% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, which means that many of our students come from homes with some financial difficulties. This makes many students unable to purchase the materials needed to be successful.

My Project

In a Visual Art classroom, there is no handbook for what to teach. We have no meaningful textbooks or teacher guides at the high school level- which is a blessing and a curse! I'm hoping to supplement my instruction and professional artistic background with the insight of others- through a robust and diverse library that is content specific by class (Commercial Art and Illustration), as well as by units of study.

These books will support about 150 arts focused high school students learn how to express themselves through words and images.

In the Commercial Art class, students will use the figure drawing books to learn the foundations of drawing figures and the basics of pursuing a career in commercial art. In Illustration, students will use the comic resource books to create personally meaningful sequential art.

We are also hoping to supply our art classroom with safe and environmentally conscious surface cleaner, hand soap, lotion, and a mop to clean up after we get messy making art!
