I currently teach kindergarten in a Chicago Public School on the west-side of Chicago. The majority of my students come from low-income families which have very little involvement with their children both inside and outside of school. I first came to Lewis school in October of last year after evacuating from New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina. Previously I worked in a well to do Catholic School in New Orleans. All of my previous students came to school knowing the basic ways to use art supplies such as scissors and glue and they always had all the supplies they could possibly need. However, when I arrived at Lewis very few of my students had any supplies and I was required to supply the classroom with all of the supplies as well as replace what I had lost in the storm. The students were so appreciative of everything I brought into the classroom however due to financial constraints I was not able to give them all of the experiences they deserved at such a young age. Most of the students did not know how to use scissors, glue, and had never seen paint and an easel for children. I would like to give my students at Lewis, a room of about 30 students both boys and girls, a full art center where they could use any materials they wanted to express themselves. I would like things such as glue, glitter, playdough, paint, brushes, an easel, etc. I feel this might help relax some students and get some of their anger issues resolved by putting them onto paper. Also, many of my students are very creative but not the best at formal academics. This would give them the opportunity to learn a talent that they can really excel at doing. Furthermore, at such a young age, kindergarten, I want my students to enjoy school and want to come everyday. Without these experiences at school many of these students will never be able to experience childhood activities.
