Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
On average, over 350 students enter my classroom to engage in the arts each week! They are intelligent, funny, creative, and constantly full of insight and inventive ideas. A diverse bunch, my students enjoy the time and space an art class provides for self-expression and artistic exploration. Many are talented artists, aiming to improve and hone in on their artistic skills, some even preparing to apply for arts-based high schools in the near future.
Many of my students are first or second generation immigrants, and almost all qualify for free breakfast and lunch at school.
In addition, our school is a part of NYC's unique Nest Program, which incorporates students on the autism spectrum into inclusive classrooms. This means we have a high number of students with ASD and special educational needs. Hearing all of my students' stories and learning about their life experiences is a unique privilege and a great joy. Our school works hard to ensure that all students have rich, meaningful experiences in the arts through theater, dance, music, and the visual arts classes.
My Project
Our current classroom library has just few drawing books, most from previous fundraising projects! These books are a wonderful resource that allows students to work independently and grow in their artistic skills at their own pace. Each day, students in every grade beg to use or borrow the "How to Draw" books (Anime and Manga in particular!) in our small collection. However, we currently don't have enough books for more than 4 or 5 students to use at a time! These books will allow more students to happily grow in their drawing skills and work on their art independently. Students' skills sky-rocket with practice and these books are just what our classroom needs to help them practice and perfect their skills!
