This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school day is packed with math and literacy lessons, but it is hard to say that it is ever packed with art lessons. With each unit that I teach, my goal is to incorporate and expose my students to great artists and their techniques.
My students are a high-energy bunch of Kindergarteners who, so far this year, have enjoyed engaging with a variety of art materials.
I have seen students who are quieter in a large group setting blossom when given the opportunity to draw a portrait or a picture of their neighborhood; I have seen students who have a hard time sitting in their chairs for any amount of time working diligently on their art projects to their completion.
My school is located in a working-class, inner-city neighborhood of Los Angeles and many of my students come from low-income households. Many of my students have parents who work multiple jobs and struggle to meet the everyday needs of their children, such as providing regular meals or a consistent bedtime. A majority of my students do not have regular access to art or art supplies, and this project will help to broaden the scope of what they can create from their own imagination.
My Project
Since the beginning of the year, we have been budding artists with our sketchbooks, watercolor crayons, and pastels. Now I would like for my students to have the opportunity to paint on canvases, like many artists do, as a culminating project. They will use these materials to paint a setting and characters from a story we have read this year and hopefully keep it as a memento to remember this school year by.
I would like for my students to work toward a culminating art project that shows permanency and can last for years.
It would be wonderful for them to have a piece of canvas that they can hang on a wall in their house and take pride in the fact that they created it.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
