Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are elementary-aged children who live right outside of the city of Houston, Texas. The school is designated as Title I, meaning that most students come from low income households low income. Many of the students are also English Language Learners. My students work hard and they are super eager to learn.

My Project

This year in art we are going on a voyage around the world! Each lesson we embark on a journey to a different country or region. The children have been LOVING this and are so excited to come to art class to see where we will be going next.

The next stop on our journey is Japan, where we will be creating sushi bento boxes and bowls of ramen.

The students will learn about the geography, a little history and the lifestyle of the people who live there.

For the bento box assignment, students will create a tray with the construction and copy paper. They will create their own sushi rolls with painted paper that they will use the scraper to create texture. The ramen bowls will feature noodles that they will form from yarn. The students will decorate the bowls with the metallic Sharpie markers. Both projects' "cherry on the top" will be real life chopsticks!
