Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are curious, energetic, and warm-hearted individuals who attend a neighborhood public school in a northwest community of Chicago. The vast majority of my students are first-generation Americans whose families hail from all parts of Latin America, including México, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Costa Rica, to name a few. Their rich culture is celebrated in the classroom where many students receive academic instruction in Spanish through the school's Dual Language Program.
By nurturing their biliteracy and bilingualism, my students demonstrate that they value their heritage; they empower themselves by taking pride in their identity and ownership of their many abilities.
In a city where the common narrative is that minorities are "underprivileged" or "at-risk," these inspiring and resilient young people boldly flip the script and show the power that comes from embracing who they are and where they come from. Their educational journey is a truly remarkable one.
My Project
Because different people learn in different ways, I aim to use these supplies to incorporate art and tactile learning in my classroom. For example, with the colored pencils and markers, students will be able to create artistic expressions of the science content we are learning such as parts of a cell, the circulatory system, and more. Moreover, they will use these same supplies to create meaningful posters of motivation that they can place on our classroom walls to help make the space their own.
Aside from artistic expression, these supplies will provide them with the tools they need to keep their classwork organized.
The classroom needs to be orderly to promote a sense of stability for learning. Each table in my classroom will be equipped with basic office supplies so that my students can practice their organization skills and build responsibility for managing their learning materials. As middle school students, this is a great opportunity to exercise habits that will keep them organized in the years to come.
