My students need books related to art such as the Getting to Know The World's Greatest Artists series. They also need books and to help inspire them in their art.
"I say Mona, you say Lisa!"
Mona Lisa sits on my wall and "watches" the students to see who has good behavior. At the beginning of the year not a single student knew her name. Now every student from kindergartner to fifth grade can tell you who she is.
My students have a thirst for knowledge and like most children they love being read to.
However, being a new art teacher in an art program that is just starting, I have just 2 books. Both are from my personal library and this is most certainly not enough! Art is more than just painting a pretty picture. It is learning what life was like during the time a piece of art was created. It is learning how people discovered good ways to express themselves. But doing this without books is a hard thing. My students love to listen to the words being read and then create art that relates to the book.
I am writing this request to purchase several books, including a series called "Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists." My students will use the books to learn about various artists during the history of the world. The series includes both artists' work in it as well has a biography about them. To engage students, the books also have funny educational cartoons that relate to the artist or work. I have seen students read these cartoons and learn more information because the cartoons hold their interest. The other books will be used to explain in a story format about artists, color mixing, and give inspiration for art work.
Literacy is important!
Every student uses some form of literacy in their life each day. Being able to connect literacy to art will not only help those students who struggle in art but excel in literacy to connect the two and help them in art. It will also help those students who excel in art but struggle in literacy to connect them together and give them more confidence. Please help expand our art library so that each student in the school can learn more about the history of art and the world.
