Art and Literacy

My students need a class subscription to Scholastic Art Magazine to promote not just art making, but literacy as well.

My Students

I'll never forget how I loved reading Scholastic Magazines as a student, and how much I looked forward to reading the new issues as they arrived in my classroom; I want my students to have the same experience in my own classroom.

Our students are inner-city kids who are tough on the outside, but all heart on the inside.

Our school is comprised of a very small amount of students, and since we don't have our own building, we are housed on half of one floor of a much, much larger school. They work hard and they really LOVE ART, which makes my job very enjoyable!

My Project

I have always wanted to bring Scholastic Art into the classroom, but there was never enough in the budget. The wonderful thing about these art magazines is that they will enhance and enrich my students' awareness of art. It will introduce contemporary art and artists, extra vocabulary and visual content that go hand-in-hand with what they are being taught in the classroom. With regular use of the magazines, the students' reading and writing skills will improve, which help them across all disciplines! Also, each issue comes with teacher resources, ideas for projects and lessons that can bring new life to my current lessons. I will be able to lead the class in discussions on articles and passages from the magazine (which is great, especially because we do not have a textbook to work from). My students will be able to see the artwork up close and in COLOR (which is fantastic because I have access only to black and white xerox copies of paintings!). The possibilities are endless :)

This year, New York's curriculum will be aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards, at the heart of which is an increase in Literacy skills.

What better way to enhance and improve the student's reading and writing skills than with a classroom subscription to Scholastic Art Magazine? Donations towards this request will give a much-needed boost in my students' literary skills. It will introduce them to a world outside of school; one of art, diversity and culture, broadening their horizons.
