My Project
I am requesting materials to help create a writing and art centered English classroom. Throughout the year, we will be developing our work through Writer's Notebooks, which students will make their own with the requested art supplies, such as markers, stickers, and colorful designs. We personalize the notebooks, and throughout the year they become a statement of the students' identities. Students learn to organize their writing, develop their personal style, and experiment with different narrative and expository styles. The Writer's Notebook lives and breathes with the class; through it, students see themselves learn and grow.
Through daily writing throughout the class, the Writer's Notebook becomes an extension and reflection of the learner.
Students learn to take notes on the discussion, reflect on what they are learning, generate questions, and take risks with their writing. As the year goes on, many begin to use the Writer's Notebook even outside of class, purely to explore their own thoughts.
Many of my students come into our classroom as hesitant writers. They are not confident with their writing skills, and few of them write for enjoyment or discovery. This concentrated and individualized approach to writing changes that insecurity, and students leave the class not only with a completed volume of work that reflects their growth over the year, but also an appreciation for the art of writing and new confidence in their own skills. This project also includes additional art supplies that will allow us to continue to engage in identity-building creative learning activities throughout the year!
