In our World Literature class, my students make connections between their lives and the larger global community. Following a unit studying poetry from around the world, we will read Elizabeth Acevedo's brilliant novel in verse, Clap When You Land. This novel provides a bridge between our study of poetry and our novel studies, and allows our students to explore genre while engaging in a powerful story. A coming-of-age story about two sisters separated by family secrets and brought together by tragedy, Clap When You Land explores the nature of loss, as well as the beauty of family, home, and love. My students are captivated by Acevedo's lyrical voice, as well as the dual narratives of the sisters. Yahaira, growing up in New York, and Camino, growing up in the Dominican Republic, cross cultural boundaries to come together, and their journeys provide both a mirror in which many of my students can see themselves, as well as a window into other experiences.
