My students need art supplies and 3 mini iPads to complete a QR code activity to learn about different leaders that had an impact on equal rights and then create images.
Do you remember what it was like in school? Sitting in rows and listening to the teacher talk for hours and the only art was a coloring sheet? Well things are changing. My students need to foster an appreciation for the arts, as well as be engaged in meaningful hands-on lessons.
My students attend school in Louisiana and we are an "A" rated school.
We are fourth graders and must take the state's high-stake testing in March and April (LEAP). My students are hardworking students that are using old technology that rarely works and must be shared with other classes, six total in the 4th grade.
My Project
The innovative nature of the implementation of technology opens the door for endless student-centered activities. I am requesting 3 iPad minis and art supplies to help in successfully implementing the activities described below:
Teaching students about Civil Rights and all of the important people who have had an impact on such an important event that shaped our history used to be so boring, because all we had were textbooks to read. Now with the implementation of activities like linking Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" Speech to a QR Code with the iPad and analyze the media for various reasons and then seeing what others say about his speech will truly bring history to life. There are so many historical events that can be "brought to life" with the use of technology in students' hands! Going even further and having students pick a person who they feel had an impact on equal rights and create a piece of art showcasing this person and then create a QR code so others can learn about these leaders.
Integrating technology and the Common Core Standards will prepare my students for the challenging jobs in the future.
The Art and Civil Rights project is aimed at providing students with the tools and skills they need for success in a global environment, as well as the time and art supplies to nurture their artistic side and tie it into social studies.
